ETO
Gas known as Ethylene Oxide gas is an alkaline agent that penetrates packaged
medical devices to destroy microbes and thus accomplish goal of sterilization. ETO
Sterilization is most acceptable method in medical device sterilization, though,
ETO gas is poisonous gas so it is important to understand the process involved
in ETO sterilization.
Further,
Due to spontaneous nature of EO Gas, the actual ETO process must occur within
enclosed chambers to prevent leaks & exposure to the ethylene oxide gas.
Also EtO Sterilization is a lengthier process as it involves three stages which
are pre conditioning, sterilization and Aeration.
Pre-conditioning:
In this first phase, product to be sterilized passes through it which in turn
enable the parasite / microbe growth. It is to preheat and humidify product
loads to predefined conditions. This will assure a repeatable EO sterilization
process regardless of pre-processing load storage conditions.
Sterilization:
In this stage the required level of ethylene oxide is widely kept open to
assure sterility for a device or family of devices.
Aeration: Lastly,
the product passes through an aeration stage where even tiny droplets of ETO
get removed.
ETO
